Culture of Calangute

Calangute is a place which has its own unique culture. The Goan culture in itself is an amalgamation of the Indian and Portugese cultures. Since the Portuguese ruled these places for several decades, their practices are seen even to this day amongst the Goans. Music is inborn in every Goan. Calangute being in the Konkan belt has several Konkani influences on its culture too. This place has its own unique form of music and dance. As a matter of fact, there are several popular musicians who hail from this region. Some of the well-known Classical Indian musicians are Kishori Amonkar, Kesarbai Kerkar, Jitendra Abhisheki, Prabhakar Karekar. Lorna Cordeiro is one of the most popular Konkani singers in Goa. The Portugese introduced the Piano, Violin and Mandolin to the Goan music.

Music in Calangute

The Dhalo, Deknis, Dulpod and Mando are different forms of music. The Deknis, specifically has its origins from places like Bardez and other parts of North Goa. This form of music is a beautiful blend of western and native music but has Konkani lyrics. Dekhnni, Fugdi, Corridinho are all types of Goan forms of dance. Western social dances are also quite popular amongst various social gatherings.

Even though the majority of people living in Calangute are Hindus, there is sizable population of Christians as well. Being a coastal town, most fisher folk are Christians. The Portuguese brought in the,  religion of Christianity here. A small population of Muslims reside here too.

Traditional Attire Worn in Calangute

Calangute being a land of sun, sand and surf usually has a very light form of dressing. Specially if one is here to enjoy the various adventure activities, it is better to be dressed in light cotton clothes. However, there are several traditional forms of dress that are worn here too. The Nav-vari or nine yard sari is a traditional costume worn by the women. The Christians living here have their own style of dressing. For weddings the brides usually wear a white bridal gown and men wear suits.
